Our Animal Team

The animals at Millcreek Meadows are at the center of all we do, they are why we are here at Millcreek Meadows. the life blood of Millcreek Meadows. It’s why you’ll see the staff here come rain or shine, snowstorm or middle of the night, our focus is on the welfare of the animals. We place their welfare above everything else.

Without them, Millcreek Meadows would just be another piece of land, the animals add so much character and personality to the park. We know you all have your favorites! If you don’t yet, please come down and see who your favorite becomes. Equine therapy is something we are passionate about. All the volunteers, and the full-time staff have seen the benefits of horses and therapy being combined to help those in need. Heck, we benefit from it ourselves every day we work with the horses, just by being around them. They have a calming influence; they seem to know when life is a little harder than normal. The horses are why we get to do equine therapy. Horses truly are the best therapists you can have, and as long as they have our love and care, along with the occasional carrot or horse cookie, they are happy. The horses are the highlight for most people who walk the park. We are fortunate enough to have 10 amazing horses and 2 donkeys at Millcreek Meadows, and that number may grow in the future, keep your eyes peeled for new residents!

Our 3 goats are excited to get more attention from the community. They love to show off their headbutting games. And to help with unwanted rodents, we have 4 working barn cats, they are elusive and if you get to see them, consider yourself special. Don’t try to pet them, they aren’t very friendly, it’s kinda in their job description.

Let’s introduce you to our herd!

The Millcreek Meadows Animal Family

  • Charlie – 2004 Warmblood Thoroughbred Cross.

Charlie is the old man of the herd. A retired stunning grey standing tall at 16.2hh. Wayne’s first horse and one of his best friends. Don’t be surprised to see him throwing traffic cones, or playing with his beloved squeaky chicken.

  • Bob - 2005 Quarter Horse Mustang Cross.

Bob is a lovely gray mare who loves to be ridden by children and teach them how to be a cowboy or cowgirl. She’s calm, super friendly, and loves a good scratch when she is in the mood for a little attention.

  • Zephyr- 2006 Quarter Horse

Zephyr was given to Millcreek Meadows to be used in our Equine Therapy program. He is a gentle soul who brings comfort to those around him. His calm nature, and loving demeanor make him a favorite at the fence.

  • Freckles- 2008 Mustang

Freckles is on lease to us to help children learn to ride. Freckles is a petite horse, who technically is a pony, based on height. Though she has a massive personality and is a leader in the herd for sure! She is a bay roan, which means speckled with white. Her favorite game is to not be caught for riding.

  • Boogie- 2009 Missouri Fox Trotter

Boogie is a beautiful sorrel who wants to be as close to you as possible. He loves attention and cuddles. Boogie is one of the friendliest horses at Millcreek meadows and spends most of his time with his best friend ‘Hondo’. They go on a lot of trail rides together. Boogie is a favorite of our Barn Manager Ava.

  • Hondo- 2010 Missouri Fox Trotter

Hondo’s black and white coloring makes him a favorite at the barn. Hondo is a gentle leader and keeps everyone who rides him safe. His personality is even brighter than his coloration. He’s super attentive and knows exactly what you need when you’re stood next to him. He genuinely cares about you and your day. Wayne spends all his spare time rising trails with Hondo.

  • Chick- 2011 Missouri Fox Trotter

Chick is the horse that sparked Amber’s love for horses. Chick is a liver chestnut with sun kissed streaks in her mane and tail. When you hear the term, “boss mare” they are talking about Chick. She is very much the ‘mom’ of the herd and sets the tone for how the day will go. Chick is Knox’s mom and loves to play with him.

  • Snoopy 2018 Shetland Pony

Snoopy has all the opinion and attitude of a giant horse, in a tiny pony body. He has a big personality and is currently learning to drive a cart. Snoopy likes to chill with the big boys and much like a Great Dane dog, has no idea he is actually smaller than the rest! He’s got a personality that goes for miles and miles! A staff favorite for sure.

  • Ginny- 2019 Clydesdale

Ginny is the largest horse on the property. Ginny belongs to one of our staff and has a sweet personality with a dash of mischief   Ginny mixed in. She and Charlie are inseparable and spend a lot of time grazing and running as often as they can. Ginny is a great part of our therapy program, she might be large, but she doesn’t know it.

  • Goose- 2020 Quarter Horse

Goose is a beautiful little horse. She has a cool color, called ‘Grullo’. It makes her look like a silver blue, and her sweet disposition perfects the whole package. Goose is still young, still learning and Jessica Jo spends a lot of time working with her to help her be her best horse self. Goose likes to spend time with Charlie and Ginny, and gets more confident by the day.

  • Knox- 2023 Curly Missouri Fox Trotter

Knox is a curly replica of his mom, Chick. He is the baby of the herd and learning how to be a big boy horse. At less than 2 years old, he gets to just be a horse until he is old enough to ride. He’s playful, runs around like a crazy horse should, and is super friendly with all the other horses, he’s every horses pal, and we love that about him!

  • Winnie- 2018 Burro (Donkey)

A burro is a donkey that was caught in the wild. Winnie is still quite young and has a very quiet personality. She’s a little nervous still and is still learning to trust humans. Our Mission

Millcreek Meadows exists to ensure nature stays in the city, and that it doesn’t get misplaced in all of the growth, houses, and office blocks. We are here to remind people that nature exists and that nature benefits everyone.

Our Vision

The vision of Millcreek Meadows is to be a place for children and community members to interact with nature and learn about the ways it benefits us all.

The History

As Utah’s 12th largest city, Millcreek’s focus from its inception in 2016 has been to be “Connected By Nature.” But the history of this uniquely located oasis dates back even further. Salt Lake County has always been distinguished by its access to nature and green spaces; through the efforts of the Parks and Rec department this area was kept open as they chose Mary Lee Brighton to steward and impact the locale with her equestrian experience. As a well-known figure within the English riding community, Mary Lee established “Brighton Meadows” in 1980 and ran youth showgroups, summer camps, and individual riding lessons each summer providing many city dwelling kids an opportunity to experience horses.

She along with business partner, Marcia Thayne, worked hard to continue offering access to equestrian opportunities to the community. As the years have moved forward changes and shifts brought with it a period of less attention and focus on the land and its upkeep. The County saw the need to revive the space and chose Millcreek Meadows to change the direction the property was going in with the express interest of continuing the equestrian legacy infused by a fresh new vision. Jessica Jo Stenquist along with Ryan Walton, Amber Scholes, & Wayne Scholes have worked tirelessly to breathe new life into the area. All the preparatory work required to get things up to code and safe for the public has allowed Millcreek Meadows to work with many entities to guarantee the new foundational work plans for a long future relationship with the community. We are so excited to be partnering with the animals and nature as we introduce their conscious utilization in our innovative approach that will foster rediscovery, resilience, and renewal for so many community members.
